‘Ashlar’ retaining walls in Sevenoaks, Kent.

With substantial retaining walls around the property, our client wanted to introduce some kind of decorative detailing or relief applied to the large expanses of surface area. The style of property lent itself perfectly to adding an ‘ashlar’ effect to the walls.

We first applied an approximate 20mm covering of an Ivory Fassa Bortolo Fassacouche, OC2 class special formulation render and then a scraping finish. Then, with the rendering set but not fully hardened, we marked out the precision ‘joints’ using special Ashlar cutting tools to a specified depth. The finished result accurately echoes the traditional dressed stone masonry seen on the facades of classical architecture.
